You’ll then ask yourself how fast do I need to charge, what are amps, kilowatts, tails, plug types etc.
Pretty soon your head will hurt and you’ll just want someone to tell you the answer!
Well Tesla enthusiasts we are going to show you the best way to turn your home into a Tesla-friendly, electron-pumping station.
Put on your electric thinking caps, because we’re about to explore the wild world of Tesla home charging in Australia.
The options below are from our very own Tesla home charging calculator. We have a lot of experience setting up and installing Tesla home charging systems (we are a Tesla Certified Installer) so we decided to put this knowledge into an easy to use calculator. Give it a try or read below for an explanation that will help you work out the best setup for your situation.
1. Old Reliable – The 10 Amp Power Point and Tesla Mobile Connector
Tesla offer what’s called a ‘Mobile Connector’. It costs $550 from Tesla and it’s the electric equivalent of a golden retriever – always there for you. Just plug it into a standard 10 amp power point like you would a toaster or kettle.
This method will fill your Tesla with a respectable 13 kilometres per hour of charging (0% to 100% in around 40 hours), making it perfect for those leisurely Sunday sips of electricity or for when you’re really determined to prove slow and steady wins the race.
What you’ll need and Installation cost
1. Tesla Mobile Connector = $550 (see Tesla shop)
2. Installation cost:
The cost of this depends on whether you have a power point near where you park the Tesla and the load of the circuit that the power point is on. If the circuit the power point is on also handles appliances that guzzle a lot of electricity (e.g. ovens, electric cooktops) you may need a dedicated circuit for your Tesla. Costs are listed below:
- If you need a new power point on an existing circuit the estimated cost is $330 plus GST.
- If you need a new power point on a new dedicated circuit the estimated cost is $600 plus GST.

How fast will this charge?
Approximate Power Output:
- Charge at 2.3kw/hour
- Add around 13 kilometers per hour.
- This will charge a Tesla from 0 to 100% in around 40 hours.
Advantages:
- Very cost effective as standard outdoor power points are cheap to install. You may already have an outdoor power point near your driveway or garage.
- If you go away you can take the mobile charger with you.
Disadvantages:
- Slow charge rate may not be enough for those who travel a lot each day.

2. The Power Point Upgrade – 15 Amps power point and Tesla Mobile Connector
Feeling a bit of a need for speed? Let’s push the pedal to the metal – or the plug into the socket, as it were – and level up to a 15 amp power point.
This is where a qualified, experienced Electrician installs a 15 amp power point with a dedicated circuit from the switchboard to the power point location.
This cheeky upgrade, still using your loyal Tesla Mobile Connector ($550 from Tesla), gets your road warrior about 20 kilometres of range per hour of charging (0% to 100% in around 25 hours). It’s the perfect balance for those who like living life in the medium lane.
What you’ll need and Installation cost
- Tesla Mobile Connector = $550.
- Installation Cost: $650 plus GST
- Brand new dedicated circuit: 15 amp cabling from switchboard to the power point location.

How fast will this charge?
Approximate Specs:
- Charge at 3.3kw/hour (approx)
- Add around 20 kilometers per hour.
- This will charge a Tesla from 0 to 100% in around 25 hours.
Advantages:
- Cost effective as 15 amp outdoor power points are relatively cheap to install.
- If you go away you can take the mobile charger with you.
Disadvantages:
- Charge rate may not be enough for those who travel a lot each day.
3. Power Point’s Big Brother – 32 Amp Point, Tesla Mobile Connector and a 32 Amp Tail
Do you feel the need, the need for… more speed? Cue the 32 amp power point with a Tesla Mobile Connector and a 32 amp tail!
Strap in and hold onto your hats, because this setup is about to deliver a whopping 50 kilometres of range per hour (0% to 100% in around 10 hours).
This option is like an all-you-can-eat buffet for your Tesla’s battery, just make sure to bring a certified electrician along for the ride!
What you’ll need and Installation cost.
- 32 Amp power point Installation Cost = $1,120 plus GST
- A dedicated 32 amp circuit is installed by a qualified and experienced Electrician. Please ensure they also install a type B RCD circuit protection device for improved safety (per Australian standard).
- Tesla Mobile Connector = $550.
- 32 Amp Tail for the Tesla Mobile Connector (approx. $250)

How fast will this charge?
Approximate Specs:
- Charge at ~7kw/hour
- Add around 50 kilometers per hour.
- This will charge a Tesla from 0 to 100% in around 10 hours.
Advantages:
- Fast rate of charging means you can charge from 0% to 100% in around 10 hours which is overnight for most people.
- Can take the mobile charger and 32 amp tail with you and use it at caravan parks and other 32 amp power points. The Tesla Mobile Connector also has a 10 amp and 15 amp connector so you can use it where ever you find a power point.
- A 32 amp power point gives you flexibility to charge other vehicles with the appropriate adapters. Note: Tesla wall connector can charge other vehicles with the appropriate adapter.
Disadvantages
- The tail you get must be high quality and may need to be changed regularly if it’s left outdoors.
- Doesn’t look as good as a Tesla wall connector (see options below)
4. The Trusty Steed – Tesla Wall Connector with Single Phase Power
Now, if you’re the sort who treats their Tesla like a prized thoroughbred, then why not give it a stable to match? The Tesla Wall Connector is your trusty steed in the race of Tesla home charging. When paired with single phase power, this noble charger will add approximately 50 kilometres of range per hour (0% to 100% in around 10 hours), ensuring your Tesla is always ready to bolt out of the gate.
What you’ll need and Installation:
- Tesla Wall Connector: $750 from Tesla.
2. Installation cost = $1,420 plus GST
- You’ll need an experienced Electrician to install a dedicated circuit and to commission your Tesla Wall Connector.

- Indoor and Outdoor compatible.
- Wifi connection enables over the air updates, ability to remote lock the charger, and control power sharing amongst multiple wall connectors.
- Can charge other types of electric vehicles (with appropriate adapters).
- If you have a Tesla Mobile Connector you can just keep it in the car without having to pack it every time you go away.
- Looks really cool!
Disadvantages
- More expensive option.
5. The Thoroughbred of Chargers – Tesla Wall Connector with Three Phase Power
Finally, for the Tesla owners who are always looking for the next best thing, we present the pièce de résistance: the Tesla Wall Connector with three-phase power.
This isn’t just a charger, it’s the triple-crown winner of the Tesla home charging world. With this setup, you can clock in at a lightning-fast 75 kilometres of range per hour (0% to 100% in around 6.5 hours), allowing your Tesla to be recharged and ready to go faster than a kangaroo on a trampoline!
What you’ll need and Installation:
- Tesla Wall Connector: $750 from Tesla.October
2. Wall connector Installation cost: $2,037 plus GST.
You’ll need an experienced Electrician to install a dedicated circuit and to commission your Tesla Wall Connector. It’s more expensive to install a Tesla Wall Connector on 3 phase power because an experienced Electrician will use thicker gauge cable and install a Type A RCD circuit protection device. Cost: $2,037 plus GST.
3. Convert to 3 phase power
The cost to convert to 3 phase power can vary greatly depending on the situation at your property. 3 Phase power is sometimes not available at certain properties. Consult with an experienced Electrician to ensure you get good advice for your situation.

- Very convenient and easy to use on a daily basis. Literally just plug and play.
- Indoor and Outdoor compatible.
- Wifi connection enables over the air updates, ability to remote lock the charger, and control power sharing amongst multiple wall connectors.
- Can charge other types of electric vehicles (with appropriate adapters).
- If you have a Tesla Mobile Connector you can just keep it in the car without having to pack it every time you go away.
- Looks really cool!
Disadvantages
- 3 Phase power upgrade can be expensive (but does help with other electrical issues around the house).
