The switchboard is the one part of your electrical system that everything else depends on, and it’s the part almost nobody looks at.
If yours still has ceramic fuses with fuse wire in them, or it’s a mix of old and new bolted together over thirty years, this is worth ten minutes of your time.
What the switchboard actually does
Three things live in that box, and they do different jobs.
The main switch cuts power to the whole property. Worth knowing where it is before you need it.
Circuit breakers protect the wiring. If a circuit draws more current than the cable can safely carry, the breaker opens before the cable overheats. They protect your house from catching fire.
RCDs — safety switches — protect people. They detect current leaking to earth, which is what happens when electricity finds a path through a person, and they cut supply in around 30 milliseconds. Fast enough to prevent a fatal shock.
That distinction matters more than anything else in this article. A circuit breaker will not save your life. An RCD will. Plenty of Melbourne homes have breakers and no RCDs, and the owners assume they’re covered.
Signs your switchboard needs attention
Ceramic fuses with fuse wire. If you’ve ever rewired a fuse, your board predates modern safety standards entirely. This is the clearest signal there is.
No RCDs. Look for buttons marked “T” or “Test” on the board. If there are none, you have no personal shock protection.
Frequent tripping. Sometimes a fault, often a board that’s out of circuits and has everything crammed onto too few.
A board that’s physically full. No spare ways means every new circuit becomes a compromise.
Heat, discolouration or a burning smell. Stop. That’s an emergency call, today.
Buzzing or humming. A switchboard should be silent. Noise means loose connections.
Lights dimming when appliances start. Often a capacity issue rather than the board itself, but it’s the same investigation.
Age. If the board is over 25 years old, it was designed for a house that used a fraction of the power yours does now.
Why this matters more in older Melbourne homes
Through Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell and Glen Iris there’s a lot of beautiful housing stock between 50 and 120 years old. The homes have been renovated, sometimes several times. The switchboards frequently haven’t.
What we find behind the cover is often decades of layered work — a circuit added here for a kitchen renovation, another there for a rear extension, none of it documented, all of it feeding through a board sized for a house with a fridge, a stove and some lights.
It works right up until it doesn’t.
What an upgrade involves
Assessment first. We look at the existing board, the incoming supply, the state of the wiring behind it and what you actually run. There’s no point fitting a beautiful new board to cable that needs replacing.
Isolation and removal. Power off, old board out. This is why upgrades happen during the day — you’ll be without power for a few hours.
New enclosure and gear. Modern board, appropriately-rated main switch, circuit breakers sized to each circuit, and RCD protection across all final subcircuits as required by AS/NZS 3000.
Circuit separation. Often the real improvement. Loads that were sharing a circuit get their own — kitchen, laundry, air conditioning, EV charger — so one appliance can’t take out half the house.
Labelling. Properly labelled, so the next person who opens it knows what’s what.
Testing and certification. Full testing, then a Certificate of Electrical Safety issued. Keep it — you’ll want it when you sell.
Sometimes the meter panel needs upgrading at the same time, particularly if the consumer mains are undersized or the panel itself is asbestos-based, which is not unusual in homes of a certain era and needs handling properly.
What it costs
The honest answer is that it depends, and any figure we published here would be wrong for most houses.
What moves the number: whether it’s a straight board swap or a full meter panel upgrade, the condition of the consumer mains, how many circuits you need, whether asbestos is present, whether the board location has to change, and whether the existing wiring can safely stay.
What we’ll do is look at it, tell you what’s needed and what isn’t, and give you a fixed price before anything starts. No hourly rates that drift, no discoveries halfway through that weren’t discussed.
While you’re at it
Two things worth doing at the same time, because the board is already open and the power’s already off:
Smoke alarms. Interconnected mains-powered alarms with battery backup. If one goes off, they all go off.
Capacity for what’s coming. If an EV or a heat pump or ducted air conditioning is on the horizon, size for it now. Adding circuits to a board with spare ways is cheap. Replacing a board twice is not.
And if the load has genuinely outgrown single-phase supply, that’s the conversation about three-phase power.
